How do place value charts help children learn place value?

What is Place Value?

What is a Place Value Chart?

What is a Place Value Chart?

In maths, place value describes what every digit in a number is worth depending on its position.  Place value is a fundamental maths concept which is essential for children to understand in order to master the maths curriculum.

When the same digit is put in a different column on a place value grid, the value changes. E.g. in the number 4,532 the 4 digit is worth a 4 thousands, whereas in 3,204 the 4 digit has a value of 4 ones.

As a digit is put into the neighbouring column to the left, the value of the digit becomes ten times larger.  When a digit is moved in to the column to the right, the value of the digit becomes ten times smaller.

What is a Place Value Chart?

What is a Place Value Chart?

What is a Place Value Chart?

Place value charts and grids are printable tables that are used with other place value resources such as counters and base ten to explore what each digit in a number is worth by physically interacting with objects.

In primary school, children learn about whole numbers: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, Hundred Thousands and Millions.

By the time they reach Year 6, they should confidently understand that there are numbers smaller than one (called decimals and fractions) and the corresponding place value of decimal numbers: 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 with their fraction equivalents: tenths, hundredths and thousandths.

plavalmat® Place Value Mats

Why is Oakfield Learning's plavalmat® better than other place value charts?

Colour matched to the White Rose Maths and Power Maths schemes commonly used in schools, a plavalmat® is a place value mat which has been teacher-designed to be a longer-lasting and more engaging alternative to traditional printable place value charts, worksheets and resources.

From our own experiences of 20 years teaching primary children, we know how time consuming and costly it can be making resources from card or paper that need to be stuck together.  These are only able to be used a few times before looking tired. These could be laminated but they are then difficult to store as folding or rolling can make them difficult to re-use.   Oakfield Learning's plavalmat® place value mat is made from a flexible, lightweight and hard-wearing natural rubber to overcome these problems.

To improve children's confidence and fluency in a wide range of maths topics, and to be as multi-functional as possible, we have designed column headings to include a range of letters, symbols and numbers to be used support the teaching and learning of the following maths curriculum areas:  Number facts and Number bonds; Place Value; Addition and Subtraction; Multiplication and Division; Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Money and Measurement.

Our plavalmat® range are manufactured in the UK.  There are five different styles which are teacher designed and therefore have been specifically tailored and to meet the Mathematics 2014 National Curriculum statutory requirements for Years 2-6:

  • Year 2 plavalmat® (ages 6-7)
  • Year 2/3 plavalmat® (ages 6-8)
  • Year 3 plavalmat® (ages 7-8)
  • Year 3/4 plavalmat® (ages 7-9)
  • Year 5/6 plavalmat® (ages 9+ also suitable for consolidation with Year 7 pupils)

Year 2 plavalmat®

Place Value Mat for Year 2 children aged 6-7 in KS1 primary

For children age 6-7

By the end of KS1, pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value by working with numerals, words and the 4 operations, including with practical resources.

The Year 2 plavalmat® place value chart has tens and ones columns plus a grey working area with integrated ten frames.  This is beneficial for pupils who are using double sided counters to consolidate number bonds to 10 and 20 whilst learning the place value of two-digit numbers.

Year 2/3 plavalmat®

Year 2 Year 3 maths resource place value mat hundreds, tens and ones with ten frames

For children age 6-8

By the end of KS1, children need to know their number bonds to 20 and to work with numbers to AT LEAST 100.

This plavalmat® can be used with children in Year 2 who are working at a greater depth and are ready to explore three digit numbers.  It can also be used in Year 3 with pupils who are still working on their number bonds, whilst other children in the class are confidently working with Hundreds, Tens and Ones.   It can be used with double-sided counters, numicon (number frames), dienes (Base 10) and place value counters.

LEARNING TOGETHER

The Maths Mastery Curriculum approach is based on whole-class teaching where all pupils work together to learn mathematical concepts through activities, questioning and discussions.  Pupils learn at the same pace and move on together.  This gives those who may be struggling more time to develop their understanding.  At the same time, other children who have grasped things more quickly, have the opportunity to study the same content in greater depth, solving more complex and challenging tasks and applying what they have learnt to different situations.

Therefore, we have designed this plavalmat® so teachers can plan lessons and activities using resources that all children in the class will be able to access including pupils with SEND.  This can also be beneficial when in smaller schools who have classes with mixed ability Y2/3 year groups.

Year 3 plavalmat®

Year 3 maths blank place value chart with hundreds, tens and ones

For children age 7-8

Year 3 pupils need to become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value.

The Year 3 plavalmat® is suitable for children who are working with numbers to 1000 and exploring three-digit numbers as this place value grid is printed with Hundreds, Tens and Ones.  The columns are wide enough for base ten (dienes) but have useful ten frames integrated in the blank sections to make it easier to subitise when using place value counters.

Year 3/4 plavalmat®

Year 4 age 7-9 maths place value mat grid with tens, ones and ten frames printed

For children age 7-9

By the end of Lower KS2, pupils need to become more fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and place value with increasingly large whole numbers.

In Year 3, children work with numbers to at least 1000 and begin to count up and down in tenths (0.1).

In Year 4, children master their understanding of 4-digit numbers and begin to count up and down in hundredths (0.01).

In both year groups, children solve problems involving money.

Our Y3/4 plavalmat® decimal place value chart has a wide range of column headings so it can be used not only to support place value, but also conversions of measure, money and fraction/decimal equivalents.  Unlike printable charts which are limited to A4 or A3 sizes, our place value mats are long enough to fit all the required place values whilst the columns are still wide enough to fit base ten (dienes).  This is beneficial for children who still need visual representations to see the size comparison of numbers, which is not possible with place value counters.   The added bonus with our product being a rubber mat, they can simply be rolled up for future use (see care instructions).

For children age 7-9

Year 5/6 plavalmat®

Year 6 age 9-11 maths place value mat with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, measures

For children age 9+

In Upper KS2, pupils extend their understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers (whole numbers), fractions, decimals and percentages.

Our Y5/6 plavalmat® place value chart with decimals has whole numbers and decimals from Millions to thousandths.  It has a wide range of column headings so it can be used not only to support place value, but also conversions of measure, money and fraction/decimal/percentage equivalents.

As the place values get larger, so does the length of the grid which can make it very difficult to create printable place value charts to Millions without needing to attach several sheets of paper or card together.  Our teacher-designed plavalmat® has been made from natural rubber to be a bright and engaging resources which is both practical and durable enough for withstand the rigours of classroom use and be stored away easily to be reused (see care instructions).

Unlike all our other plavalmat® styles, the columns are not wide enough to fit base ten (dienes).  However this decimal place value chart to Millions is suitable for use with place value counters.  You may also be interested in our plavalmat® place value counters which are designed to be used with our place value mats.

Although this is aimed primarily at children in primary schools, many secondary schools are finding our decimal place value chart valuable to support KS3 children and SEND pupils who are not working at the expected level for their age and require consolidation of concepts from primary school.
