Embossed Design

Compatible with trusted maths schemes

1 place value counter

Unlike a place value counter that is printable or made from cardboard or foam, the recycled plastic used in ours is longer lasting and washable. The disks are 25 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick at the rimmed edge.  This means our counters are easier for children to grasp when using them as concrete resources to support the pictorial representations given in their White Rose Maths pupil books and textbooks.

Our Year 5/6 set of decimal place value counters have decimals with equivalent fractions and percentages for Upper KS2 pupils.  They can also be used in KS3 to consolidate fluency and to support SEND children or pupils who did not meet the expected standard in maths at the end of KS2.

Other decimal place value counters often have equivalent fractions whereas we believe our place value counters offer the best value for money as they also have percentages.  For example our 0.1 place value counter is equivalent to 1/10 (one tenth) and 10%

How do place value counters help children learn place value?

What is Place Value?

What are place value counters?

What are place value counters?

In the maths curriculum, place value describes what every digit in a number is worth depending on its position.  Place value is a fundamental maths concept which is essential for children to understand in order to master the maths curriculum.

When the same digit is put in a different column on a place value grid, the value changes. E.g. in the number 4,532 the 4 digit is worth a 4 thousands, whereas in 3,204 the 4 digit has a value of 4 ones.

As a digit is put into the neighbouring column to the left, the value of the digit becomes ten times larger.  When a digit is moved in to the column to the right, the value of the digit becomes ten times smaller.

Place value resources are beneficial to help children to understand concepts of exchanging and regrouping which is needed to master addition and subtraction.  They can be used to support multiplication and division (for example using the counters to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000).  Furthermore, older children will find them useful to explore the relationship between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.

What are place value counters?

What are place value counters?

A place value counter (also called place value disks) are a fun, practical and interactive way for children to master their understanding of number and place value.  They are essential primary resources that can be used on their own or with place value charts, tables and grids to explore what each digit in a number is worth and how a digit can be the same but by physically manipulating a counter and placing it in a different column its value can change.  This knowledge is essential in order to develop the strong foundations needed to progress through the primary maths curriculum (see more information about Ready to Progress criteria) and to be successful in Year 2 and Year 6 SATs.

Place value counters are particularly useful tools for transitioning children from concrete learning to pictorial learning in order to grasp more complex abstract maths concepts (CPA approach) and usually have printed letters or numbers on to represent the following values: Millions, Hundred Thousands, Ten Thousands, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones, tenths, hundredths and thousandths.

plavalmat® Place Value Counters

How do plavalmat® place value counters help children with the mastery curriculum?

It is important for consistency that the colour of place value resources match the ones shown on tables and charts in textbooks, worksheets and pupil books.  Due to this Oakfield Learning has created the plavalmat® range of place value counters to be colour matched to those used by White Rose Maths and Power Maths which are two of the most popular and trusted schemes of learning used in primary, secondary schools and for home learning to support the maths mastery curriculum. For example the 1 place value counter is red, the 10 place value counter is yellow, the 100 place value counter is green and the 1000 place value counter is blue.  Other place value disks that match the Singapore colours or European colours but as these are not in line with White Rose Maths, this can lead to confusion.

Our place value counters are embossed and made from thick recycled plastic with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages which we feel make them the best place value counters available to support the 2014 primary maths curriculum.  You may like to read some of our customers reviews.

The counters are custom made to our designs by our manufacturers in Belgium using sustainable methods.  Our counter boxes are manufactured in Italy and China.

They have been designed to be used with a plavalmat® which is Oakfield Learning's more durable, flexible and re-useable alternative to place value grids and worksheets.
